Kelli at There Is No Place Like Home hosts Show & Tell Friday most weeks and I thought I would join in today.
When my father-in-law joined our household 1 1/2 years ago he brought along MANY boxes of stuff and as I've had time to sort through it all I've found some lovely little treasures. This pretty little girl belonged to my husband's mother.
I did a little "googling" and I think this is a Dresden figurine. Dresden is not something I know anything about but it looks very similar to other pieces I found online. The markings on the bottom (which I forgot to take a photo of) say "made in Germany" and include a stamp of a diamond with a letter M inside, and another of a crown. The lacey skirt looks like it was damaged during the move from Florida to Maryland. You can see where a piece of it broke off just below the little purple flower. I'm going to make a tiny little clay flower to try and cover the damage with.
My mother-in-law didn't collect a lot a things and I'm not sure how this piece ended up in the family. But with her German heritage I wouldn't be surprised to discover that this belonged to her mother before her. If anyone is familiar with Dresden figurines maybe you can tell me something about this little girl. She has the sweetest face!

ReplyDeleteI took time last night to look up your post on the Friendly Giant...I was so thrilled, I've been looking and asking many people if they knew of the Friendly Giant and it was always a NO. It's left me disappointed for years and then you come along, you friendly blogger girl so in tune to my world! Were going to have a blast together.
I appreicate the Dresden doll also, my mother had the ceramic shop and she made Dresden Dolls from the process of porcelain slip (clay) dipped in lace. They are harder to find in the Pacific Northwest. What a treasure you have. My mom also made tiny roses on the end of a pencil tip and added to the Dresden dolls gowns...lovely!
This is beautiful. My Mother's aunt had some of these when I was a little girl. They were in her parlor and we were allowed to enter with an adult and look but not touch.
ReplyDeleteI am not an expert but the crown probably does mean they are Dresden. I believe the lace was real lace dipped in liquid porcelain then applied. I would think repairing this would lower its monetary value. I think I would take it to an antique appraiser and find out if it is the real thing and how valuable it is. Of course there is the sentimental value which doesn't have a price.

I don't know anything about these figurines, but she certainly is precious. I hope you're able to find out more about her value and the repair of her lace skirt, but what a family treasure!
