A New Deck and Pergola

Well, we decided it was time to replace the old brick patio with something new.  After months of planning...project "new deck"
began in August.

This is my patio door...and the remnants of the brick patio we
had.  Bill spent a week removing the bricks.

He also carefully dug up the Vinca and Violets that were
growing in the corner by the steps (lower left in photo).

Most of the bricks came up in pairs.

Here's Bill cleaning off the bricks.  They'll be used in a new path.
He managed to salvage 95% of them.

He stacked them by our garage as he finished.
Side note: Bill bought several pallets of the large gray bricks for me....for my birthday!
He's working on edging the backyard with them.
You can see some of the completed edging in the lower right corner of this photo.

Almost all the bricks have been removed.
(I'm not sure why we have a snow shovel on the patio.)

Love that patch of moss...it will be left undisturbed.

A bonus - empty pallets to create with!!

Here's Day 1 of the deck construction. Nice deep holes for the footings....and large
black trash bags full of dirt.  Yes, that's a toilet in the background....now it's back in here.

Closing in on the end of Day 1. There's still so much to do.

Day 2 - no work today. But the inspectors came and
checked out the footers...they passed!

The company we worked with said the job would be completed on Day 3.
I'm a little skeptical. But we'll see.

They were right...this is what I found when I got home from work on Day 3...at about 4:30 PM.

By 6:00 PM our yard looked like this!

It's just what I imagined and even more!

We even have some pretty wicker furniture (given to us by dear
friends) to put on it. Next we'll work on some landscaping.

We've already enjoyed several beautiful afternoons
and evenings out here.

I love it!

I'm so glad that it's Friday....you know where
I'll be at least part of this weekend!!
Hope you have a happy one!

oh Marie, it's beautiful. My deck is an eyesore and I'm hoping that some day we can replace it.
I'm a little envious of that pile of bricks and the wood pallets too....lol

Wow, the finished deck is great! Bill had a grungy job removing all of those bricks but so worth it. I love the way a pergola creates beautiful shadows...a wonderful place to relax with a book or new magazine...or 5 grands! Now it will be fun to see what you create with the pallet wood!
Happy Weekend!
We'll be spending Sunday night in Frederick and then on to Rehoboth for a week. So glad I have my iPad to keep in touch!
