I Choose Plastic

Yesterday I posted a picture of my three beautiful grandbabies. They are so cute and so sweet and so very mobile! Bill and I were talking about our Christmas tree Tuesday night and we both agreed that we should pass on our regular tree filled with extra special (and sometimes breakable) ornaments this year. We need to go for safety first. My living room is small and it will be difficult to keep the little ones away from the tree. So we decided to go with plastic and soft ornaments this year...except for a few little favorites tucked up high.

This is so hard for me ~ I'm pretty traditional in my Christmas decorating. But Mandy and I went shopping at Target and she thought if we were going to do something different we should do something REALLY different. So we went with shiny, glittery, sparkly plastic in bright, happy colors. Did I say this is hard for me? It is!

But each of my grandbabies will be under the age of two for Christmas and they are very curious...especially Elijah & Charlotte. I don't want to worry about something breaking and someone getting hurt, and I want the adults to be able to relax while we're in that room ~ so the tree is going to have a very different look this year. I started working on it last night. I was also babysitting so I had a little help. She loves these ornaments and because they're plastic she can examine them to her heart's content.

The tree still needs some work, but here's a couple tiny peeks. I snuck in the little house...just to make me feel better about all the plastic! I need to find a few more things like it.

The plastic is pretty much in place. I just need to find some soft stuff to tuck in the holes in the branches. I'll post some pictures when it's complete....maybe! The tree will be so different from last year...but it'll be perfect for exploring little hands. 'Cause even if they're told no they're going to manage to touch a few. And they'll squeeze them...but it'll be okay....because they're plastic!

I bet your tree will turn out great. I'm sure it's going to be a little hard changing up a bit, but sometimes change is nice, right? I love the colors and plastic ornaments is smart with the little ones around. I remember when my boys were little, for a couple years we surrounded the tree with the collapsable play yard thingy. It worked, but wasn't a very attractive addition to the whole C'mas theme!

Can't wait to see your tree when you're all done.

I remember the year that we had to go with plastic due to the "throwing" tendency that my middle son had. hahahaha Any and everything needed to be launched when he was 2. I don't need those now, but every year we take them out of the box and laugh about how wild he used to be! You're a wise grandma!

Oh the things we do for grandchildren...but you made the right choice for this year I think. In a few years you can bring out all of the breakables again. I went back and looked at your tree from last year, too. We bought a new tree that is pre-lit this year. It went up last night and the ornaments will be placed tonight while we watch the Steelers game. I just love looking at the lighted tree with NO ornaments and the room lights off. Please show us the pictures when it's all decorated-I'm sure it will be beautiful and the kidlets will love it! xoxo

:-) I hear ya!
We had a two yr old at our the first part of the week, and you remember in a hurry that NOTHING is up high enough, nor will it remained untouched! LOL
My MIL always said "that she didn't want anything in her home to be more important than a child". So, I think you will enjoy your tree a lot, because you won't have all the added worry.
All your little grands are darling! What fun they are going to have together when they are a little bigger huh!
Enjoy your day.

Marie, how sweet that your grand babies come first. I'm a hands-on mom so I appreciate anything the kids can handle with no fears attached. Maybe a little tiny tree somewhere else in the house, up and out of the reach of little hands, would allow you to enjoy your more traditional ornaments.

What a wonderful idea, Marie. The wee ones will be safe but still be able to be curious, which is a good thing at that age! Enjoy!
Blessings!
